How to edit windows service dependency

Leave a comment

For one reason or another you might need to change a service dependency, this is a quick guide on how to do this

well , first things are first .. in order to change a windows service dependency you are going to need to edit the registry, so make sure to take your backup before anything

now go to the services console and open the properties of the service you want to change it’s dependencies

As you can see the upper section lists all services on which this service depend upon

To Add another entry to the above section open the registry using REGEdit command

Inside registry, services parameters are located under the following path : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\{Service Name}

There you will find a key named “DependOnService” which contains a list of all services on which this Service depends on

If the “DependOnService” Key is not found , in other words this service has no dependencies, then create  a new Key with same name of type “Multi-string value

Now open the “DependOnService” key , and simply type the name of the service you want to add in a new line

but wait, which name should you type here ?

well its not the name that appears on the services console , that’s a friendly display name .. you need to open the properties of the service you need to add to the list and take the Service Name value as shown here MSExchangeADTopology

Ok, finished editing Registry ?

reboot your Computer  .. hope that was helpful
