How to create a bootable USB flash drive of Microsoft Windows OS

There is no doubt it is much easier to install Windows OS from a USB Flash drive, every technical support guy who is used to install windows frequently for multiple clients knows this. It is faster and saves you the headache of burning DVDs for your installations just to forget where you placed it or to find it scratched.

So in this article i am going to show you how to use a free tool from Microsoft that is very easy to use for making a bootable USB drive that can be used for installing windows.

First you need to Download the tool from Microsoft website Here  Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool, Then install it , this should be straight forward

After your installation is finished launch the tool from the start menu

Once the Tool opens browse for your Windows 7 DVD ISO file and press Next

Connect your USB drive and choose USB device as shown

Make sure the correct drive letter is chosen and click Begin

You will be notified that you are about to format that USB drive, make sure you do not have any data on it and continue

Once Formatting is done the tool then starts to copy Windows files to the USB drive

Here you go, a USB flash drive with windows operating system that you can boot from .. Nice and Easy

Enjoy .. This should be working for Windows 7, Windows Sever 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 RC, those are the ones i tested

Okay now for the unfortunate ones (including myself) who have tried the above steps and got the below error

You get this error because you are trying to create a 64-bit bootable OS from a 32-bit media, This tool uses bootsect.exe to make the USB device bootable and what happens here is that you are missing the bootsect.exe file. So what you need to do is get the right file from the Windows 7 32-bit ISO under the Boot folder and then place it in the tool installation folder, the default is (C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Apps\Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool) and you’re done, restart the operation and it shall succeed.
